Saturday December 6th, there’s a lot going on at The Rio Theatre (Broadway and Commercial), all of it part of Cthulhupalooza (kuh-too-loo-pah-loo-zah) - I’ll see if I can break it down for you.

For starters, there’s a Rock Band contest, sponsored by the game creators, Harmonix - if you’ve got some pals, and think you can rock it out, the contest is open to all attendees. Finalists get to rock it out on stage, and the winners, besides winning sweet prizes, can perform with The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. The Thickets have a track on Rock Band, so that’s the connection.

Then later there will be a screening of the HP Lovecraft Historical Society’s Call of Cthulhu (which is done as an old-school, silent movie) along with other visual fun.

And then the evening is capped by a performance by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets! Lead singer and chief instigator Toren was recently a guest-host on CITR’s We All Fall Down, helping to get the word out and drive some funds for CITR’s on-going funding donations (listen here.)

Besides being a barrel of monkeys, the event is helping to raise money for Child’s Play, which helps provide hospitals around the world (including BC’s Children’s Hospital) with video game systems, toys, and other fun things that make time spent in a hospital that much less sucky.

There’s a website for the event, which has information on where to pick up tickets (RX comics, Elfsar comics, Scratch, Red Cat, Zulu, and Neptoon records, etc. plus online sales via PayPal), how to enter the Rock Band contest, and more as the day of the event gets nearer!

Please spread the word, as the event benefits from having as many people as possible in attendance!

Full disclosure - I am helping to organize this event. It’s a charity event, so I’m not sure if you give full disclosure on that sort of thing. But let’s just say I a lot of my heart invested in this event, and I wish it to go well. Hope to see you there.

Huzzah. We pulled it off. Change has come to America. Yes we can... party. For the first time in like forever the good guys won. Obama, Gregor, Beyond Roson. OK I'm geting carried away, I must have taken the hyperbole pills by accident. But still, considering DiMetric was shut down the night before, Kristin, Ryan, Duran, Ami, JZ, Jen, Jon, et al. rallied the base and pulled off an improbable victory. We called upon the grassroots, and Edo and the Peanut Gallery came to the rescue. The turnout was staggering. OK that's enough mixed metaphors, but seriously, who actually shows up when the poster tells them to? By 10 came around, Gang Violence had broken the ice, Hot Panda had melted it, and The Bicycles were in gear. It had become apparent that we were way over capacity. Old Sean Orr McMean Face stepped in and had to start turning people away (sorry!).

But anyways, the JagJaguwar blog-stars will be headlining our municipal election special joined by Toronto's The Bicycles, Edmonton's Hot Panda, and locals Gang Violence and The Clips. We don't need to tell you that Gang Violence is one of Vancouver's best new bands. In fact, just don't come. Admire the poster from afar, but curse that the show is all the way in East Vancouver.

Why we hate the Toronto Maple Leafs

There was a time and place I actually liked the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I actually cheered for them against the L.A. Kings during the 1993 NHL playoffs in the Campbell Conference finals.

The following year, during those magical playoffs of 1994, my attitude began to change as the seeds of hate for the Leafs were sown during the newly-christened Western Conference finals against the Canucks.

Don't get me wrong, I've been to the city and love it, but when it comes to sports, it seems as if Toronto is a little self centered.

The station that is now known as CityTV, but was known as UTV back in '94, ran a piece where Toronto fans were looking past the Canucks before the series even began, anointing the Maple Leafs 1994 Stanley Cup champs--neither would hoist the Cup unfortunately.

The 2008 edition of Whistler Film Festival kicks off with the world premiere of Anand Ramayya’s feature length documentary, Mad Cow Sacred Cow, on December 4th, 3:00 pm at the Rainbow Theatre in Whistler.

In the wake of the Mad Cow Crisis, terrified of his food, filmmaker Anand Ramayya (Cosmic Current) embarks on a journey from his in-laws’ family farm in Canada all the way back to India, land of the Sacred Cow. His Journey reveals shocking connections between the Mad Cow crisis and Global Food crisis.

Weaving interviews from Dr. Vandana Shiva, Maneka Gandhi, Dr. Murray Waldman, Nettie Wiebe and Swami Agnivesh with stunning visuals of a personal journey that crosses continents, the story of Mad Cow Sacred Cow takes us from the filmmaker’s own happy days of indiscriminate beef consumption to the frightening realities created by globalization.

Congratulations to the crew: Producer/ Writer/ Director Anand Ramayya, Producer Ryan Lockwood (Hulo Films), Cinematographer Thomas Hale, Composer Raj Ramayya, Editor Chris Bizzocchi.

Financing partners of Mad Cow Sacred Cow include Canadian Television Fund, Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund, Rogers, SaskFilm and broadcast partners CBC Newsworld, Saskatchewan Communications Network, and Knowledge Network. It will air on CBC Newsworld's The Lens in January 2009.

Well, I could have told you that. "Outgoing mayor says he likes to create 'new realities'. Uh, how high was he when he said that? Is he going to trademark that one too? Is bailing out banks and not disclosing any info to the public a "New Reality"?

Former Vancouver mayors resuscitated the Olympic Village bailout story by pleading with reporters to let the story die. Also, local blogger Sean Orr resuscitated the story by repeating the phrase, "Olympic Village bailout story" 17 times: Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story. Olympic Village bailout story.

If you haven't been bombarded with wasteful notices to vote, or had random people stop you in the street (no, not those random people), I'll remind you once again that this Saturday, November 15th is the day you need to go vote in our civic election.

Frankly, most people I know aren't too concerned about the election. While I'd like to blame society for the lack of voter mobility among my Gen X/Y counterparts, I know it's really just because they're lazy. And high.

Ray LaMontagne Brings It On Home

Before folk singer and songwriter Ray LaMontagne came to town, I was wondering how the brighter moods of his new album, "Gossip in the Grain," would affect his tour.

On Saturday, LaMontagne answered this question by taking the Vogue by storm with the high-energy, Motown-flavor of "You Are the Best Thing." The crowd responded with equal enthusiasm as they grooved to the beat. Ray continued to permeate energy into his next number, "Hold You in My Arms." While it may have seemed that the tone of the concert didn't make it easy for fans to sing-a-long, nothing could stop the die-hards from mouthing the words they knew so well. Ray is not one to talk much between numbers, but when a guy yelled out "I love your beard!" his quiet humor had the hall laughing with the quiet response, "uhhh, thats nice...but a little creepy."

The small size of the sold-out venue made for a more intimate experience as Ray played his first slow song "Let it be me." The soulfulness that LaMontagne pours out comes as a surprise when I see the shy and unassuming bearded man in person. While the lights rarely shone on Ray, he exposed himself in a different, more personal way. His throaty voice often seemed to vocalize his innermost thoughts and emotions. LaMontagne was able to muster passion from his whole body as he romanced the audience with the troubled words of the love songs, "I Still Care for you" and "Burn."

I want to like the Vancouver Canucks, I really do. I want to feel like they’re my team, and try I’ve given it my all to root for them [mbv]. For God’s sake I’ve lived in British Columbia for the past twenty-four years, it’s about time I consider myself a Canucks fan. Right?

The thing is those formative years spent in Edmonton are powerful, and especially during the time I was there. Memory and nostalgia are a hard thing to overcome, which is why the good ol’ days always seem better than they were. It’s even harder to put aside the past when the past could kick the present’s ass on the ice any day of the week.

It’s not the Canucks’ fault that they’re not as good as the Oilers of my youth, because… well because nobody is. The team that I grew up with was the greatest hockey team the world has seen, and probably will ever see again until the NHL shrinks down to a smaller size. All the big money teams that the Red Wings or Colorado might try to put together will never compete with the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s, it was just so good.

How good was it? It was so good that even the people who lived in the shadow of the giants like Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey are bound for the Hockey Hall of Fame. Yesterday Vancouver born Glen Anderson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame [nhl] as a further sign that there was something special about that team. He’s not the first name that pops to mind when you think of the Oilers’ dynasty, but he was an important part.

He was even a Canuck for a few days in 1996, though he was claimed by the Oilers on waivers.

While I’d love to see the Canucks lift the cup, and in a lot of ways I think there’s certainly a segment of the Canuck fans that deserve to see their team win, I have to admit I’ll never love them as much as I love the Oilers. They’ll never be as good as the team I grew up with, though let’s be honest the Oilers will never be that good either.

I was hoping that the drizzly Friday night on November 7 wasn't an indication of what I could expect from the Secret Machines and their new self-titled album. As I waited outside Richard's on Richard's for the doors to open into the dry sanctuary, people who knew the Machines (including myself) were asking one question: "Are the Secret Machines the same band without front man Benjamin Curtis?" The answer was an overwhelming YES.

This city is going to hell in an Olympic size handbasket; Eby gives you a rundown of the secret dealings. Since then Ladner has said that he's 'prepared to lose the election to save this project,' which apparently requires lying to all of us. Yep, I'm sure if you gave us the step-by-step rundown of how and why your party has been fucking this city over, we'd elect you in a heartbeat.

On Friday judges elected Geri Tramutola of the Work Less Party as winner of Last Candidate Standing. Or were they just voting against Fritz the Cat? "He's entertaining and disgusting: not unlike some of the people I'm running with," says Michael Geller. Running with or against there, Mike? Either way, I love it.

"Citizens make haste, before droves of beloved Texans ride north." But at least we'll still have our teeth. Oh, and don't forgot about this group of pissed off Americans, many of whom may also be itching to relocate to Vancouver.

29 year old law student charged with stabbing an old friend 30 times outside of a West Van country club found guilty of... manslaughter??

Forget Geller, candidates gathered at the Creative City Cabaret on Saturday to offer irrevocable proof that the current state of local politics is indeed more painful and absurd than a poorly timed serial-rapist joke.

Sheila Heti - author and maverick

There are many well known Canadian authors that use their fame to create television shows or robot hand to autograph books around the world without leaving her house... But then there are authors that simply strive for originality without any regard for glory. Sheila Heti maybe best known for writing the celebrated novel Ticknor and the acclaimed story collection The Middle Stories. Her work has been published in The Believer, The New Yorker, Geist, Esquire, Brick and more. But I believe she should be best recognized for created the "Trampoline Lecture Series".

The Trampoline Lecture series is something that makes us D.I.Y kids proud. The series was created by Heti and hosted by Misha Glouberman. These shows feature three lecturers speaking on subjects they're not experts on, in addition to readings and other activities. The New Yorker praised the series for "celebrating eccentricity and do-it-yourself inventiveness." Lecture topics range from wacky things like "Female poisoners of 18th century France", "Gossip is worse than pork" to less wacky subjects like "Hasidic speed dating" and "Not being naked". Okay... well they're all kinda wacky. Heti and Glouberman started the series in 2001 in Toronto and have sold out every show since.

On my recent visit to the neighboring city of Coquitlam when I dined at the satisfying Blue Sea, I spotted Insadong at the intersection of North Road and Lougheed Highway, as I was making the return drive home.
